Adult bed bugs are broadly oval, and the size of an apple or melon seed. They are a brownish color or red if they have recently fed.

Now that you have made their acquaintance there are a few things that will help you avoid bed bugs.

1. Metal loft bunk beds deter bed bugs

Who can blame them, I just spent two weeks in the Bahamas much nicer than the drizzle. They breed faster when it is about 80 degrees, it takes approximately a month and a half for babies to turn into adults.

2. Bed Bugs are Travelers

They love hitching a ride. In your suitcase, or on your clothes. They don’t mind going it alone, and are very social and tend to congregate with other bed bugs.

3. Bed Bugs are Mainly Active at Night

They are active usually when humans are sleeping. They like to find hiding places during the day close to beds. Those hiding places tend to be dark crevices, wooden skirting boards, air ducts, mattresses, wooden bed heads, etc. Therefore they do not have to travel far to feed.

5. Bed Bugs Hate Metal

Metal bunk beds are on their all time hate list. Why? Because metal bunk beds are cold. Remember they like the warm. A wooden bunk bed gives bed bugs a cozy place to live but metal bunk beds doesn’t give them anything to live in.

How to help avoid bed bugs in hostels and holiday accommodations.

  • Clean up your clutter. Provide storage that is easy to clean like under bed storage lockers.
  • In busy hostels/hotels purchase foam mattresses with washable covers. Covers allow you to wash them at a very high temperature.
  • Provide mattresses without the cord around the side where bed bugs commonly burrow into.
  • Metal bunk beds provide fewer places for bed bugs to hide.
  • Ensure there are no unplugged holes in any component as below image explains

holes are plugged to prevent insects entering and nesting

when metal is prepared for painting, a prosperous solution is used when the component is dipped, this solution has to drain. The hole is plugged after painting which prevents insects nesting inside ensuring the ESS statement metal loft bunk beds deter bed bugs

Metal Bunk Beds Verses Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are a major issue in the United States and around the world and once they’ve moved in it’s extremely expensive and difficult to get rid of them.

This is a typical example of a domestic mattress joining rib, which is a perfect hiding place for bed bugs, this is why ESS Sleep Systems contract waterproof mattresses are a good deterrent against these little critters.

Adult bed bugs are broadly oval and the size of an apple or melon seed. They are a brownish color or red if they have recently fed.

Metal bunk beds are cold and bed bugs like warm places.

Bed bugs are primarily nocturnal creatures and feed on warm-blooded victims.

Traditionally, hostel bunk beds were made from wood which is a naturally warm material.  Wood bunk beds expand and contract in dry and damp seasons creating gaps and crevices in the wood joints which provide the perfect hiding place for bed bugs! Metal bunk beds do not offer the same comfort and warmth for bed bugs to thrive.  The cold steel deters bed bugs from settling down during the daylight hours and then feasting on their victims at night.

Metal bunk beds are favorable but no guarantee

Bed bugs travel in groups of seven to ten.  They will climb a wall, navigate across the ceiling, and drop onto a bed. Metal bunk beds help avoid many bed bug issues but are not a guarantee. Bed bug prevention is critical for all individuals and organizations.

Tips to avoid housing bed bugs in your home, hostel, or hotel suite:

  • Have strict rules when guests arrive ensuring they do not unpack on the bed
  • Use metal bunk beds rather than wood
  • Use commercial water resistant mattresses that have a removable cover that can be washed at high temperatures
  • Use commercial water resistant foam pillows that have a removable cover that can be washed at high temperatures
  • Avoid using carpet wherever possible
  • Vacuum rooms, hallways, and mattresses daily

Triple bunk beds are a small investment that will repay itself many times over.

Picture your hostel with double bunk beds, now see it with triple bunk beds. More guests equals greater profit.

In congested cities like London, where space is at a premium often there is more space above the second tier that could be utilized. Travelers  want to put their head down for the night and  want a safe, secure sleeping place.

So if you have eight double bunk beds in a room that equals 16 customers per night. Over a week with full occupancy that comes to 112 customers.

Crocs, Lizards and Bunk Beds Continued

Crocodiles, snakes and lizards are abundant in Australia’s North.. add a Pom, a bunk bed and some education and what do you get?

Day one was very exciting as it was educational, being a passenger in the tour bus meant I paid more attention to the scenery and not the route. Day 2 I was thrown in the deep end.

“Here are the keys, have a great day” said the tour operator at the ungodly hour of 5:30 am.

I sat up and knocked my head on the upper platform of the bunk bed and threw off the bedding. quickly making my way to the 4 wheel drive bus. It dawned on me that I had to somehow find my way around alone! The combined emotions of fear and excitement, or was it more excitement than fear?  I was not sure. What I was sure of is the broken down contraption that was my commercial bunk bed seemed a contract I would have liked to have lasted a bit longer, like permanent!

Despite my fears the excitement soon took over, I found the first backpacker hostel and invited the international travelers onto my bus. Soon everyone was mingling.

The sun at its hottest

The sun had already risen over Western Australia’s far north. The rays were pounding through the windscreen of the bus making the cab feel like an oven. Now where was that air conditioning switch? To everyone’s delight after fumbling around with switches I soon felt a blast of cold air rush through the bus. Looking into my rear view mirror I could see everyone had opened their clothing to allow the cool air to rush around them. The time had come to pull more switches. I was to play tour operator, drive and commentate.

All eyes looked down the bus as I reached for the microphone. I smile as I was to formally welcome my passengers.

“Whats he saying?”  I lip read a couple near the middle of the bus.

Realizing I hadn’t turned on the microphone I started to flick switches on the microphone as well as the dashboard. People chuckled as they saw their tour guide driver sweating and frantically flicking every switch available. Where is my bed now!

This Aussie looking tour guide is a joke!

Laughter erupted throughout the bus when the microphone became live and the sweet sound of a Welsh accent danced through the bus “Good morning ladies and gentleman welcome aboard the fun bus to never-never land.”

This broke the ice but I still had to find my way to the sites I had visited yesterday on this 12 hour trip!

Tune in for next weeks update where the fun and laughter really heats up!

Supply your Hostel with our beds

Women’s refuge organisations are beyond helpful to many individuals. There are hundreds of thousands of women that experience domestic abuse, and these women seek for help and comfort in these residences. 1 in 4 women experience abuse in their lifetime and over 750,000 children witness it on a regular basis. Some women will arrive with a number of children, and there is not always enough space in the rooms to fit several single beds, as well as any treasured belongings that may have been bought along.

However, bunk beds provide double bedding, and in some cases you may find extra use from triple bunks or a single over double model.
We also provide under-bed storage, allowing any items to be stored safely and securely. For younger or nervous children that may experience incontinence, we have water resistant mattresses to ensure the mattress stays dry and clean and avoid discomfort, as the mattress can simply be wiped clean.

For those clumsy children, we also have railings around the sides of our top bunks so there is no worry of them falling out and severely hurting themselves.

As previously mentioned we also provide ‘single over double’ bunk beds, with a double bed on the bottom then a single on the top. Another option is the aforementioned ‘triple’ bunk bed, consisting of three single beds one on top of the other. This is a great bunk bed as the floor space is only taken up by the size of a single bed but provides bedding for three people.

As if that was not enough; if you don’t have the time to set up the beds yourself, we will happily come and do it for you!

We take pride in all of our bunk beds being both sturdy and durable; providing safe sleeping space for all women and their children within a refuge. All these women and children need is a safe place to sleep. Contact us now, and find the high quality bunk beds they need.
